About Us
Motility MLK Prosthetics is a small, privately held company that is focused on individual care of amputees and those in need of maintaining healthy feet. We combine a long tradition of customized, hands-on prosthetic socket molding with high technology prosthetic devices (feet, knees, hands, elbows, etc.) If a prosthesis does not fit it typically does not get used. A amputee who is successfully fitted has minimal pain and skin break-down and optimal overall energy efficiency.
What differentiates Motility MLK Prosthetics is its owners who care. Michael L Kenney, Certified Prosthetist has walked on a prosthesis since he was 16 years old and is determined to help each patient reach optimal health and activity levels. Rita M Kenney, Licensed Professional Counselor, understands life challenges and has years helping others build new lives after experiencing loss and trauma. Along with a team of others who work closely with us, Motility stands firm on the belief that patient care really does matter. "We want our patients to be with us for a long time. Too many facilities treat patients as a revolving door. We plan to share a lifetime with our patients."
Who We Are
Michael Kenney Certified Prosthetist
"My grandmother was an amputee and after a motorcycle accident in 1982 I became an amputee. Prosthetics has changed, but I'm willing to mix the old with the new for the best results. An avid outdoors-man, I lead an active life. I wish the same for all my patients. When it comes to hearing the needs of my patients, I am able to listen closely, evaluate their needs and help the patients map out a course of action that will give them the best results."
Hannah, General Flynn and Admiral Michaelis
Hannah, General Flynn and Admiral Michaelis are trained as service dogs as well as guard dogs. Hannah works with and protects Catherine Blakley, General Flynn is a mobility service dog for Michael Kenney, and Admiral Michaelis (Catahoula & Poodle) works with patients for early infection detection.
Rita Kenney Licensed Professional Counselor
"After 24 years with an international technology company and with degrees in religious studies (MA) and counseling (MA) as well as having counseling licenses and practices in both Missouri and Arkansas, I am focused on helping amputees lead new, rich, fulfilling lives."
Ioan “Cipri” Ardelean Engineer & Technician
“I was trained as an engineer in Romania. Although I love to do many things, I was introduced to building prosthetics and found the work fascinating. Each leg or arm that we build is different, each present opportunities to learn. Working with the amputees has inspired me to continually learn and improve the work that we do to provide them with prosthetics that are comfortable and improve their lives.”
Catherine Blakley Billing Services
“Trained in billing and with a life of working with insurance companies to care for a son who was born with a handicap, I enjoy the challenges that present themselves in today’s medical field. With great compassion I find joy in helping amputees in this rather practical way. If I can make things easy for our patients’ I feel that I have done something meaningful in a day’s work.”
Johnny Blakely Facilities Management
“I thought that I was going to retire and spend more time with my grandchildren. And although I do have time for more of the things that I love, with Motility MLK Prosthetics having multiple clinics, there is always something that needs to be repaired, improved, updated. I’m able to use my extensive skills to manage the various facilities. It keeps me engaged with some wonderful people.”
Our Story
Michael L Kenney was trained by a German certified Prosthetist/Orthotist, Gunter. The field of prosthetics evolved out of Europe, primarily Germany, and Gunter was an old timer in the field. "Gunter trained me on the fundamentals of socket building by having me carve out a wooden socket. He had a saying that if the socket was comfortable, an amputee could walk on a 'block of wood.'"
Of course prosthetic devices have evolved over the last years and we have incredible prosthetic devices available to us now. However, it remains true that the start of a excellent prosthesis is with a socket that fits. To this day, we build prostheses in our lab using a cast and mold that intimately captures the limb of our patients and is medically / artistically crafted to the patient's particular residual limb. Adjustments and modifications are made until the patient is comfortable.
Michael and Rita met in 2013. At the time, Michael had a successful prosthetic company which he owned and operated in Nixa, Missouri. Rita was working for an international technology company out of Brooklyn, NY. After getting married on Valentines Day 2015 in Montauk, NY they decided to join forces and open a new practice in Hot Springs, AR. We opened our doors in Hot Springs in July 2015.
In 2017, Motility purchased a building in Springfield, MO and opened a satellite office. Additionally we are set up with a mobile system where we see patients in their homes throughout the mid-west.
We have credentialing with Medicare, Medicaid and insurance companies in 3 states (AR, MO, and KS) and work with most major insurance companies.
